NABP 110th Annual Meeting to Unite Members and Other Pharmacy Stakeholders in Sunny Phoenix for Important Business Sessions, Timely CPE Programs, and Unique Networking Events

The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy^® (NABP^®) 110^th Annual Meeting, “A Partnership Reborn: Revitalized and Reunited – Boards of Pharmacy and NABP,” will provide attendees an opportunity to explore the culture and colorful deserts that make up America’s sunniest metropolis while participating in important NABP Business Sessions. During these sessions members learn of proposed resolutions and amendments to the NABP Constitution and Bylaws and delegates elect new Executive Committee officers and members. In addition, attendees may earn up to 8.5 contact hours (0.85 CEUs) of Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education-accredited continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credit while networking with peers. The meeting will take place May 17-20, 2014, at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel, in Phoenix, AZ.

Continuing Pharmacy Education

Timely and informative CPE sessions designed to address current issues affecting the regulation of pharmacy practice will be available to attendees of the 110^th Annual Meeting. These sessions, led by educators, regulators, and others who will share their knowledge, experience, and insights related to the regulation of pharmacy practice, will provide attendees the opportunity to earn up to 8.5 hours (0.85 CEUs) of CPE credit. Four joint CPE sessions are available to attendees, including the annual Educational Poster Session, sponsored by Pearson VUE; “Compounding for Office Use and Outsourcing Facilities”; “Cannabis is Here to Stay – Regulatory Update”; and “Medication Synchronization – Boards’ Role in Helping Pharmacists Increase Adherence.” One of two concurrent sessions are also available, including the session “Emerging Paradigms – Physician Dispensing and Pharmacist Compounding in Physician Offices,” geared for state board of pharmacy executive officers and members and “Diversion Prevention Tools – Working Together to Prevent Loss,” geared toward compliance officers, inspectors, and investigators. In addition, there will be one pre-meeting CPE session, “DQSA Title II: Drug Supply Chain Security and Federal-State Cooperation,” on Saturday, May 17, from 1:30 to 3:30 PM.

The Educational Poster Session, which is themed “Partnering to Protect the Public Health,” will take place on Sunday, May 18, from 8:30 to 11:30 AM, and offers attendees a unique opportunity to earn one contact hour (0.1 CEU) of CPE credit. This highly interactive joint CPE session allows board of pharmacy members and staff, as well as schools and colleges of pharmacy, the opportunity to display posters that share information about their organization’s latest legislative issues, technology, policy development, and/or patient or public safety initiatives as they relate to partnering to protect public health. More information about the CPE sessions offered at the Annual Meeting can be found in the schedule on the NABP website.

Keynote Address

Attendees will have the unique opportunity to hear from an American hero who inspires others to be their best while remaining true to their core values during this year’s keynote address. Captain Mark Kelly will move attendees during his keynote speech “Endeavor to Succeed,” as he relates how he overcame the toughest challenge of his life when an assassination attempt was made on his wife, former United States Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Kelly will share how by combining teamwork, leadership, communication, and family in an unwavering commitment to succeed, attendees can accomplish their mission while maintaining the love and devotion to family that is the foundation of true success.

Kelly is an American astronaut, retired US Navy captain, best-selling-author, prostate cancer survivor, and an experienced naval aviator who flew combat missions during the Gulf War. He has also commanded Space Shuttle Discovery and is one of only two individuals who have visited the International Space Station on four different occasions. With 6,000 flight hours in more than 50 different aircrafts, 375 aircraft carrier landings, 39 combat missions, and more than 50 days in space, Kelly is one of our country’s most experienced pilots. Already a celebrated American, Kelly became the center of international attention after the January 2011 assassination attempt on his wife. In their best-selling memoir, Gabby: A Story of Courage, Love, and Resilience, the couple shares their story of hope and resilience with the world. The inspirational memoir has topped multiple bestseller lists, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Amazon. Kelly and Giffords have captivated the nation with their story, and in 2013, on the second anniversary of the Tucson, AZ, shooting, they launched a political action committee aimed at curbing gun violence. Sponsored by Humana Pharmacy Solutions, the Keynote Address will take place Sunday, May 18, at 12:30 PM, during the meeting’s First Business Session.

Special Events

Board members who have recently been appointed to a board of pharmacy, or those attending their first NABP Annual Meeting, are encouraged to attend “From District Meeting to Annual Meeting – Learning About NABP,” on Saturday, May 17, from 4 to 5 PM. The program offers attendees the chance to learn about the role of the district meetings in NABP business proceedings, and Annual Meeting processes for discussing and voting on resolutions, amendments to the NABP Constitution and Bylaws, and the Executive Committee open member and officer positions. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to network with their fellow district members.

Honoring NABP President Karen M. Ryle, MS, RPh, the President’s Welcome Reception, sponsored by Express Scripts, will offer attendees the opportunity to catch up with old friends and acquaintances on Saturday, May 17, from 6 to 9 PM.

The Hospitality Brunch, which is sponsored by Omnicare, Inc, and takes place on Sunday, May 18, from 8:30 to 11:30 AM, will offer attendees a chance to network with their colleagues while enjoying a buffet brunch. The brunch will be held in the same area as Educational Table Top Displays, during which attendees can speak with representatives from NABP, NABP/American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Districts, federal regulatory agencies, and other organizations about important issues and programs.

In addition, the NABP/USP Breakfast, sponsored by the United States Pharmacopeial Convention, will be held Monday, May 19, from 7:30 to 8:45 am. Meeting participants are invited to attend the breakfast, which will provide an opportunity for both organizations to discuss timely and relevant topics in the practice of pharmacy.

Closing the NABP 110^th Annual Meeting is the Association’s Awards Dinner Reception and Annual Awards Dinner, held on Tuesday, May 20. The Awards Dinner Reception will take place from 5:45 to 6:45 PM and the Annual Awards Dinner will follow at 7 PM. The Annual Awards Dinner honors those individuals who have contributed their time and talents to advancing the principles of NABP and the practice of pharmacy. This special evening recognizes the efforts of the 2013-2014 NABP president and 2014 honorary president, and the recipients of various NABP awards.

NABP and the NABP Foundation is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. ACPE Provider Number: 205. Participants may earn ACPE-accredited continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credit by completing a Statement of Continuing Pharmacy Education Participation and submitting it electronically to NABP. Full attendance and completion of the program evaluation and learning assessment for each session are required to receive CPE credit and be recorded in the CPE Monitor^® system.

Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Policy: NABP staff will be available to assist attendees on an individual basis to apply for CLE credit for attending CPE sessions. To apply for CLE credit, attendees must initiate the program approval process in their own states by completing and submitting the appropriate application materials and forms. NABP will provide documentation as necessary.
