Pharmacist Licensure Transfer Yesterday and Today

For over a century, NABP has served a key role in licensure transfer for pharmacists from one jurisdiction to another. Before NABP’s assistance, licensure transfer could be a challenging maze of hurdles for boards of pharmacy and pharmacists represented by different requirements, processes, and delays. Over the years, our unwavering commitment to refreshing the services available to member boards has kept up with the evolving practice of pharmacy itself.

Today, we offer a fully digital, secure, and highly streamlined Electronic Licensure Transfer Program® (eLTP) that facilitates the licensure transfer process on behalf of our 54 member boards of pharmacy, handling over 10,000 license transfer requests per year. The program remains necessary to enable pharmacist mobility in an ever-changing profession. More than ever, pharmacists are seeking out diverse career opportunities and we remain committed to assisting them and the boards in ensuring as smooth a process as possible while still maintaining a commitment to protecting public health.

Recent Enhancements to eLTP

Our most recent updates to the licensure transfer process have made it easier than ever for pharmacy professionals to transfer their licenses. Major user experience upgrades to the online eLTP application have been the focus of these enhancements.

Upgrades include:
  1. A refined, modernized, data-driven interface creates a more cohesive user experience.
  2. Improved intuitive navigation makes it easier for users to access the functions and information they need. For example, important eLTP requirements are now listed throughout the new online application. In addition, all relevant NABP e-Profile® data is automatically transferred to eLTP applications for users to view, which minimizes the risk that applicants may forget to add their information.
  3. Pop-up “tool tips” appear to users if they do not meet state requirements for licensure, preventing common mistakes. In addition, steps were added to assist users in identifying whether they meet state-specific license transfer requirements, are required to take a jurisdiction’s Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination® (MPJE®), and more.  Providing this helpful information to applicants during the online application can also help to prevent unnecessary processing delays at NABP and the boards of pharmacy.
  4. An improved photo and cropping feature has been added. The enhanced features allow users to quickly upload and edit a photo to attach as part of their eLTP application. This feature has been one of the most requested based on past surveys of boards.

Updates for Armed Forces Members and Their Spouses

We understand that members of the military and their families have specific needs, and we offer an armed forces discount for eLTP. Individuals in the military may be required to move to other jurisdictions often, and this discount model helps alleviate the cost associated with transferring your pharmacist license.

  • Active members, reserves, or honorably discharged veterans are eligible for a 100% discount on the eLTP application and transfer jurisdiction fees (restricted to 1 purchase per jurisdiction).
  • Armed forces spouses are eligible for a 50% discount on the eLTP application and transfer jurisdiction fees (restricted to 1 purchase per jurisdiction).
  • Officers in the Commissioned Corps of the US Public Health Service are eligible for this discount if they are actively deployed outside of the US to any of the 7 branches of the armed forces.

These advancements provide solutions that empower pharmacists and the boards of pharmacy by streamlining the licensure transfer process. Looking ahead, we will continue to adapt our licensure transfer service and other offerings to fit the pharmacy landscape through continuous collaboration with our member boards, pharmacists, and other stakeholders.
