Models for using artificial intelligence, or AI, in health care settings have been around for some time, and the application of such models is rapidly evolving, including in the area of health informatics. Without regulatory oversight, pitfalls with health informatics can place the public at risk. While AI and machine learning can play an integral role in a pharmacy’s patient record-keeping system or a hospital’s electronic medical records system, actions are needed to ensure that Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act protections are in place and data are used ethically to improve patient care. Attendees will learn from an AI expert about some issues that regulators need to be aware of and how to inspect AI tools to protect the public from potential harm.
