Healthcare Merchant Accreditation for Telemedicine Providers

NABP’s Healthcare Merchant Accreditation program for telemedicine providers demonstrates legitimacy to online advertising platforms and credit card brand networks. Telemedicine businesses can ensure smooth access to advertising and payment processing by showing that they are operating in compliance with NABP’s 10 rigorous program standards, including compliance with applicable laws.

NABP’s Accreditation Expertise Ensures Compliance

For more than 120 years, NABP has supported patient safety by working with our members, the boards of pharmacy. Your Healthcare Merchant Accreditation is handled by pharmacists and legal professionals who understand pharmacy and telemedicine regulation. Telemedicine companies are thoroughly vetted for compliance with state laws regarding permitted telemedicine modalities and licensure requirements, and we confirm that all affiliated fulfillment pharmacies are also in compliance with our program standards.

Why Should Telemedicine Providers Become Accredited by NABP?

  • Fulfill credit card brands’ certification and monitoring requirements for telemedicine providers that conduct card-not-present (CNP) transactions.
  • Meet advertising requirements set by online advertising platforms.
  • Be included on our Safe Site Search Tool for consumers as an Accredited Healthcare Merchant.

How to Get Started

  • Review Eligibility Requirements

Review the program’s eligibility requirements and Healthcare Merchant Accreditation standards.

  • Complete the Prescriber Licensure Template.

Telemedicine applicants submit prescriber licensure using the Prescriber Licensure Template. Make sure to include all prescriber licenses in all states where you offer services.

  • Complete the Telemedicine Modality Template.

    • “Telemedicine modality” describes the mechanism(s) by which a patient has an encounter with a provider. Some states use modality to determine whether there is a valid patient-practitioner relationship. Telemedicine modality requirements are state-specific. Examples include audio-video, audio-only, and asynchronous online questionnaires.
    • Make sure to provide enough detail about the minimum modality (or modalities) required in each state for every telemedicine encounter.

    Apply for Accreditation

After determining that your business is eligible and fully in compliance, apply for accreditation.

If you operate a telemedicine platform that uses one or more fulfillment pharmacies, even if that relationship is informal,  you will need to provide information about those fulfillment pharmacies and they will also need to comply with our program standards.

    Review and Approval Process

We will then review your application and request any additional information we need to assess your compliance. Once we determine that you are in compliance with the standards, we will approve your organization. You must then register and make active a .pharmacy domain and enroll in the annual subscription to maintain accreditation.
