A new website was launched by the Verified Top-Level Domains (vTLD) Consortium, a voluntary association of registry operators that verify all registrants prior to permitting use of a domain name. The vTLD Consortium’s website, www.vtld.domains, aims to enhance public knowledge about the unique value of vTLDs as legitimate and trusted channels for products, services, and communications online, indicates the press release. In contrast to generic TLDs, such as .com or .net, which can be obtained by anyone after paying a nominal fee, vTLD Consortium registry operators grant domain names only to applicants that undergo a verification process to establish that the applicant is a legitimate entity that is relevant to the specific vTLD.

NABP helped found the vTLD Consortium along with seven members that are registry operators for 14 vTLDs. More information about NABP’s role in the vTLD Consortium and its founding is available in the September 2016 issue (PDF) of Innovations (page 17).
