The United States House of Representatives Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet held a hearing today, May 13, 2015, to hear testimony from stakeholders regarding the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, how the Internet is governed, and steps for trust and accountability in the Internet’s operation. As part of the hearing, the committee heard testimony regarding how the governance of the Internet impacts illegal online sales of medications. Among those testifying before members of Congress was the president and founder of LegitScript, an organization that encourages consumers to purchase medications online only through pharmacies that have been accredited by NABP’s Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites® program, and the only Internet pharmacy verification service endorsed by NABP. Testimony was also heard from representatives of the Internet Trademark Association, Amazon.com, and the Coalition for Online Accountability, among other stakeholders.
