A new search tool from LegitScript provides information on dietary supplements and other similar health care products indicating whether a product is known to be unsafe or marketed with unsupportable claims. The LegitScript Healthcare Product Search contains data on thousands of supplements and health care products collected from regulatory authorities around the world. The search tool can be used to research whether a product is known to contain toxins or active pharmaceutical ingredients, is marketed with unsupportable claims, or has some other problem suggesting a health risk. LegitScript indicates that “While many supplements have no known problems, thousands of others have been tested or reviewed by some reliable authority – not only the US FDA, but also its counterparts in countries ranging from Canada and EU countries to Singapore or Australia – and found to either contain dangerous ingredients or inappropriately imply safety or medical effectiveness.” The database also includes information on the illegal synthetic drug products often referred to as “bath salts” or “herbal incense.” A LegitScript blog post provides examples of unsafe products discovered in the US and around the globe. The blog post also explains how products are classified in the new LegitScript Healthcare Product Search tool.
