National Association of Boards of Pharmacy ® (NABP®) has expressed its support for the Pharmaceutical Compounding Quality and Accountability Act (S 959) in a letter (PDF) to United States Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee Chair, Senator Tom Harkin, and the Committee Ranking Member, Senator Lamar Alexander. In its letter, the Association affirms the proposed legislation’s:

  • recognition of the authority and autonomy of state regulatory agencies,
  • distinction between compounding and manufacturing,
  • support for the Food and Drug Administration, and
  • provisions defining a new category of manufacturing to address and regulate a critical patient need.

The letter also notes NABP’s concern with provisions regarding the oversight of the intrastate distribution of non-patient-specific, sterile, compounded products. NABP detailed these concerns, in testimony presented at a HELP Committee hearing on May 9, 2013.
