Delegates to the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP®) 109th Annual Meeting, held May 18-21, 2013, in St Louis, MO, elected individuals to fill the president-elect, treasurer, and open member positions on the Association’s 2013-2014 Executive Committee.

The newly elected officers of the NABP Executive Committee are President-Elect Joseph L. Adams, RPh, a member of the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy, and Treasurer Edward G. McGinley, MBA, RPh, a member of the New Jersey State Board of Pharmacy. James T. DeVita, RPh, a member of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy, Susan Ksiazek, RPh, a member of the New York State Board of Pharmacy, and Gary Dewhirst, RPh, a member of the North Dakota State Board of Pharmacy, were elected to three-year member terms.

At the conclusion of the Annual Meeting, Karen M. Ryle, MS, RPh, a member of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy, assumed the office of NABP president, and Michael A. Burleson, RPh, executive director of the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy, assumed the position of chairperson of the Executive Committee. In addition, the following members are continuing to fulfill their terms on the 2013-2014 NABP Executive Committee: Mark T. Conradi, JD, RPh, member of the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy; William John Cover, RPh, member of the Indiana Board of Pharmacy; Jeanne D. Waggener, RPh, member of the Texas State Board of Pharmacy; Mark D. Johnston, RPh, executive director of the Idaho State Board of Pharmacy; and Hal Wand, MBA, RPh, executive director of the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy.

Abbreviated biographies for the officers and members of the Association’s 2013-2014 Executive Committee follow.

Chairperson: Michael A. Burleson, RPh

Mr Burleson, executive director of the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy, automatically assumed the office of chairperson after completing a one-year term as president. Prior to his position as president, he served a one-year term as NABP president-elect, a one-year term as treasurer, and a two-year member term representing District 3 on the Executive Committee. An active member of NABP, Mr Burleson has served on several committees, including the Teller Committee for the 2007 NABP Annual Meeting. He also served as chair of the NABP Committee on Law Enforcement/Legislation, and as chair of the Resolutions Committee for the 2006 NABP Annual Meeting. Mr Burleson has also been actively involved with local and national pharmacy associations. A member of the Kentucky Pharmacists Association since 1974, he served two terms as a board member, and has served on various committees. He was also a member of the Tri-County Pharmacists Association and served the organization as its treasurer for 12 years. Mr Burleson earned his bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from the University of Kentucky. In 1995, he received the Outstanding Alumnus University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy award.

President: Karen M. Ryle, MS, RPh

Ms Ryle, a member of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy, automatically assumed the office of president. Prior to the election, she served a one-year term as president-elect, a one-year term as treasurer, and served for four years, from 2006 to 2010, as an Executive Committee member representing District 1. An active member of NABP, Ms Ryle has served on several Association committees such as the Advisory Committee on Examinations and the Committee on Constitution and Bylaws. She also served as chair of the Task Force to Develop Recommendations to Best Reduce Medication Errors in Community Pharmacy Practice. Ms Ryle is the associate chief of pharmacy for ambulatory care at Massachusetts General Hospital, and also teaches as an adjunct faculty member and an advanced pharmacy practice preceptor at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Ms Ryle earned a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy and a master of science degree in drug regulatory affairs from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

President-elect: Joseph L. Adams, RPh

Mr Adams, a member of the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy, was elected to serve as president-elect. Prior to the election, he served a one-year term as treasurer and a three-year term as an Executive Committee member representing District 6. An active member of NABP, Mr Adams served as Executive Committee liaison to the Advisory Committee on Examinations, and as a member of the NABP Committee on Law Enforcement/Legislation and the NABP Task Force on Continuous Quality Improvement, Peer Review, and Inspecting for Patient Safety. As a member of the Louisiana Board, Mr Adams participated in several committees, including serving as chair of the Reinstatement Committee and as a member of the Violations Committee and the Regulations Revision Committee. In addition, he is a staff pharmacist for Walgreen Co. Mr Adams earned his bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from Xavier University of Louisiana College of Pharmacy.

Treasurer: Edward G. McGinley, MBA, RPh

Mr McGinley, a member of the New Jersey State Board of Pharmacy, was elected to serve as treasurer. Prior to the election he served a three-year member term, representing District 2, on the Executive Committee. Mr McGinley has been on the New Jersey Board for 12 years, serving as either president or vice president for 11 of those years. In addition, Mr McGinley is the vice president of pharmacy at Chain Drug Consortium, LLC, in Mt Laurel, NJ. An active member of NABP, Mr McGinley has served on several task forces and committees. He served as chairperson of the NABP Committee on Constitution and Bylaws and as a member of the Task Force on Prescription Monitoring Program Standards. Mr McGinley earned his bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from Temple University College of Pharmacy, and earned a master of business administration from Temple University Fox School of Business. He was also a fellow at The Wharton School and Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics, University of Pennsylvania.

Executive Committee Member: James T. DeVita, RPh

Mr DeVita, a member of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy, was reelected to serve a second three-year member term, representing District 1, on the Executive Committee. As a member of the Massachusetts Board, Mr DeVita is currently serving his fourth term as president. In addition, he is the director of quality assurance and patient safety at CVS Pharmacy in Woonsocket, RI. An active member of NABP, Mr DeVita has served on the NABP Task Force to Review Accreditation Standards for Community Pharmacy and the Task Force on Continuous Quality Improvement, Peer Review, and Inspecting for Patient Safety. He also served for two years on the Committee on Constitution and Bylaws. Mr DeVita earned a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy, and a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences.

Executive Committee Member: Susan Ksiazek, RPh

Ms Ksiazek, a member of the New York State Board of Pharmacy, was elected to serve a three-year member term, representing District 2, on the Executive Committee. Ms Ksiazek has served two terms as chair of the New York State Board of Pharmacy. She is the director of medical staff quality and education at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, NY. An active member of NABP, Ms Ksiazek has served as the chair of the hospital sub-group of the Task Force on Revisions to the Controlled Substances Act and as chair of the Task Force on Pharmacy Technician Education and Training Programs. She has also served as a member of several task forces, including the Task Force on Telepharmacy and the Implementation of the Medicare Drug Benefit Medication Therapy Management Provisions. Ms Ksiazek earned her bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from the State University of New York at Buffalo, School of Pharmacy.

Executive Committee Member: Mark T. Conradi, JD, RPh

Mr Conradi, a member of the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy, is serving the third year of a three-year member term, representing District 3, on the Executive Committee. He also served a one-year member term on the 2010-2011 Executive Committee. Mr Conradi has served as president of the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy. In addition, he is a pharmacist at CVS, a private attorney, and an adjunct professor of law and ethics at the Harrison School of Pharmacy. Mr Conradi has 35 years of experience in pharmacy operations, pharmacy management, and regulatory affairs. An active member of NABP, Mr Conradi has served on the Committee on Law Enforcement/Legislation and on the Task Force on Mail Delivery of Prescriptions. Mr Conradi earned his bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from Auburn University and his juris doctorate from the Birmingham School of Law.

Executive Committee Member: William John Cover, RPh

Mr Cover, a member of the Indiana Board of Pharmacy, is serving the third year of a three-year member term, representing District 4, on the Executive Committee. Currently, he is the corporate manager of pharmacy affairs for Walgreens Pharmacy. An active member of NABP, Mr Cover has served as a member of the Committee on Law Enforcement/Legislation and as chairperson of the Committee on Resolutions. He has also served as a member of the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination® (MPJE®) Review Committee and as an item writer for the MPJE. In addition, Mr Cover was a member of the Task Force on Emergency Preparedness, Response, and the US Drug Distribution System. As a member of the Indiana Board, Mr Cover has chaired the Board’s Pharmacist Immunization Sub-Committee and Pharmacy Security Sub-Committee, and he co-chaired the Pharmacy Technology Sub-Committee. Mr Cover earned a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from Purdue University School of Pharmacy.

Executive Committee Member: Gary Dewhirst, RPh 

Mr Dewhirst was elected to serve a three-year member term, representing District 5, on the Executive Committee. Mr Dewhirst has been a member of the North Dakota State Board of Pharmacy since 1999 and has served as the Board’s president. In addition, he is a pharmacy manager for Thrifty White Drug in Hettinger, ND. Previously he owned and was general manager of Hettinger Drug, LLC, in Hettinger, for over 20 years. As a member of NABP, Mr Dewhirst has made many contributions to the NABP District 5 meetings, including serving on the Resolutions Committee. Mr Dewhirst earned his bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from North Dakota State University. He also holds certifications in pain management, immunization, and medication therapy management.

Executive Committee Member: Jeanne D. Waggener, RPh

Ms Waggener, member of the Texas State Board of Pharmacy, is serving the second year of a three-year member term, representing District 6, on the Executive Committee. Ms Waggener has served as a member of the Texas State Board of Pharmacy since 2006. Currently, Ms Waggener is Health and Wellness Market Director for Wal-Mart Pharmacy where she was previously a pharmacy manager. Ms Waggener has worked in the community pharmacy environment for over 40 years. An active member of NABP, Ms Waggener served as chair of the Task Force on Internet Pharmacy Practice Standards, and was a member of the Task Force to Review and Recommend Revisions to the Controlled Substances Act. She also served as a member of the Task Force on Pharmacy Technician Education and Training Programs, the Task Force toReview TOEFL iBT Score Requirements, and on the Committee on Constitution and Bylaws. Ms Waggener has served on the Texas Medicaid Drug Utilization Review Board since 2005. She earned a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from University of Texas, Austin.

Executive Committee Member: Mark D. Johnston, RPh

Mr Johnston, executive director of the Idaho State Board of Pharmacy, is serving the second year of a three-year member term, representing District 7, on the Executive Committee. In addition to his duties with the Board, Mr Johnston is an instructor of pharmacy law at Idaho State University. He has also worked as a pharmacist and as a pharmacy manager for a chain pharmacy. From 2000 to 2007, Mr Johnston held the position of pharmacy district manager for Albertsons/SUPERVALU pharmacies headquartered in Boise, ID. Mr Johnston has been an active leader in pharmacy associations, and has served as president of the Idaho State Pharmacy Association and as a board member. He is also a member of the American Society for Pharmacy Law, American Pharmacists Association, and Idaho Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Mr Johnston earned his bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia.

Executive Committee Member: Hal Wand, MBA, RPh

Mr Wand, executive director of the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy, is serving the third year of a second three-year member term, representing District 8, on the Executive Committee. Mr Wand began his career with the Arizona Board as a compliance officer in 1989 and then as a deputy director in 1994 before being named executive director in 2003. Prior to joining the Board, he worked as a hospital pharmacist, long-term care pharmacist, and community pharmacist. An active member of NABP, Mr Wand participated in both meetings of the Task Force on Telepharmacy and the Implementation of the Medicare Drug Benefit Medication Therapy Management Provisions. In addition, he developed and reviewed questions for the MPJE. He earned his bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from the University of Arizona and his master of business administration degree from the University of Phoenix.
