Kentucky PMP Plans to Participate in NABP PMP InterConnect

The Kentucky prescription monitoring program (PMP), known as the Kentucky All Schedule Prescription Electronic Reporting (KASPER) program, has agreed to join the NABP PMP InterConnect^SM, the system that facilitates the secure sharing of data between state PMPs, a key element for early detection, intervention, and prevention of substance abuse and diversion of controlled substances. Kentucky’s KASPER is scheduled to execute a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with NABP to participate in the NABP InterConnect soon.

PMPs in Connecticut, Indiana, Michigan, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, and Virginia, have implemented use of the NABP InterConnect, giving authorized PMP users the ability to request and share program data across state lines. In the first 200 days since the launch, 158,562 requests have been processed through NABP InterConnect. Based on current implementation time frames, authorized users of PMPs in Arizona, Kansas, New Mexico, and West Virginia will be able to access data across state lines in the second quarter of 2012. In addition, PMPs in Mississippi and Utah have executed an MOU with NABP to participate in the NABP InterConnect and an additional seven states have MOUs under review.

In a press release, Governor Steve Beshear stressed the importance of KASPER participation in the NABP InterConnect. Governor Beshear stated that Kentucky “must use every tool available to attack th[e] deadly scourge” of prescription drug abuse on the state. He stated further that one of Kentucky’s “key strategies is sharing information with surrounding states, so that we can not only cut off access to abusers, but also identify the problem prescribers.”

It is anticipated that more than 20 states will be sharing data using the NABP InterConnect in 2012.
