Medetomidine, a veterinary tranquilizer, has become more prevalent in the illegal drug supply, says Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in a recent official advisory. Humans who are exposed to medetomidine (also referred to as “rhino tranq,” “mede,” or “dex”) are at risk of experiencing bradycardia, hypotension, sedation, and may also experience withdrawal symptoms. CDC advises administering opioid overdose reversal medications for these suspected overdoses, as fentanyl is involved in most cases where medetomidine is present.
