A new exam blueprint for the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination® (MPJE®), the MPJE Content Outline, has just been released. Effective March 1, 2027, this new exam blueprint will replace the former MPJE Competency Statements. An exam blueprint lays out the key elements of an exam, and competency statements and content outlines are 2 types of exam blueprints.
MPJE exams administered on or after March 1, 2027 will be built using the MPJE Content Outline. Applicants taking the MPJE before March 1, 2027 will still use the Competency Statements to study for their exams.
How the Content Outline Is Created
NABP performs regularly scheduled exam blueprint updates during a review period called a practice analysis. The most recent MPJE practice analysis began in February 2026 and resulted in the updated exam blueprint. Practice analyses have several phases:
-
Phase 1:
A panel of practicing pharmacists determines the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) required to evaluate situations involving the applicable federal and state laws and regulations that govern the practice of pharmacy in the state in which you are seeking licensure.
-
Phase 2:
The panel determines the testable KSAs and organizes them in a way that supports test design, allows for quality question writing, and logically groups topics for MPJE stakeholders.
-
Phase 3:
A survey is administered to a representative sample of practicing pharmacists to collect feedback on the updated exam blueprint.
-
Phase 4:
The panel of practicing pharmacists and NABP committees finalize the updated exam blueprint using the survey feedback.
What’s In the Content Outline?
The content outline is composed of 4 content domains. The content domains are the high-level content areas of knowledge assessed on the exam. Each domain is weighted appropriately, meaning that one domain might have approximately 30 questions on the exam, while another has 20. Here are each of the content domains, their weight, and their purpose.
| Content Domain | Purpose | Exam Weight (Approximate Number of Questions) |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Pharmacy and Pharmacist Practice | Testing your pharmaceutical science knowledge, including compounding, drug development, and more. | 30% (30 questions) |
| 2. Medication Use Process (Prescribing, Transcribing and Documenting, Dispensing, Administering, and Monitoring) | Evaluating your understanding of medications, including drug names and therapeutic classes, substitutions, immunizations, and more. | 30% (30 questions) |
| 3. Regulatory Authority and Legal Obligations | Assessing your understanding of patient care, including health histories, patient health conditions, and more. | 20% (20 questions) |
| 4. Pharmacy Operations | Examining your knowledge of public health initiatives, ethical concerns, and more. | 20% (20 questions) |
Each of the 4 major content domains contain subdomains detailing specific topics. Read the full detailed content outline to learn more.
Why Is the Content Outline Important?
If you’re getting ready to take the MPJE, you can use the MPJE Content Outline as a helpful study tool. (Reminder, the current competency statements are in effect until February 28, 2027.) As the content domains detail each area of the test, you can use them to see what areas you may want to focus your studying on and what you feel confident about. We also offer study tools like the Pre-MPJE® to give your knowledge a trial run before test day.
If you’re taking the Uniform MPJE™ (UMPJE™), you can prepare for the exam by studying the UMPJE Content Outline and taking the Pre-UMPJE™. You can find more MJPE/UMPJE information on our website.
