Delegates to the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP®) 115th Annual Meeting, held May 16-18, 2019, in Minneapolis, MN, elected individuals to fill the president-elect, treasurer, and open member positions on the Association’s 2019-2020 Executive Committee. The newly elected officers of the NABP Executive Committee are President-elect Timothy D. Fensky, RPh, DPh, FACA, a member of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy, and Treasurer Caroline D. Juran, RPh, DPh, executive director of the Virginia Board of Pharmacy. Bradley S. Hamilton, RPh, vice president of the Maine Board of Pharmacy, was re-elected to a three-year member term; Tejal J. Patel, MBA, PharmD, RPh, president of the Delaware State Board of Pharmacy, was elected to a three-year member term; Jeffrey J. Mesaros, PharmD, JD, RPh, chair of the Florida Board of Pharmacy, was elected to a one-year member term; and Shane R. Wendel, PharmD, RPh, member of the North Dakota State Board of Pharmacy, was elected to a three-year member term.
At the conclusion of the Annual Meeting, Jack W. “Jay” Campbell IV, JD, RPh, executive director of the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy, assumed the office of NABP president, and Susan Ksiazek, RPh, DPh, a member of the New York State Board of Pharmacy, assumed the position of chairperson of the Executive Committee. In addition, the following members are continuing to fulfill their terms on the 2019-2020 NABP Executive Committee: Philip P. Burgess, MBA, DPh, RPh, a former member of the Illinois State Board of Pharmacy; Lenora S. Newsome, PD, president of the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy; Nicole L. Chopski, PharmD, BCGP, ANP, executive director of the Idaho State Board of Pharmacy; and Richard B. Mazzoni, RPh, chair of the New Mexico Board of Pharmacy.
Abbreviated biographies for the officers and members of the Association’s 2019-2020 Executive Committee follow.
Chairperson: Susan Ksiazek, RPh, DPh
Ms Ksiazek, a member of the New York State Board of Pharmacy, automatically assumed the office of chairperson. Prior to the election, she served one-year terms as president, president-elect, and treasurer, and one three-year member term, representing District 2, on the Executive Committee. An active member of NABP, Ms Ksiazek served as the District 2 secretary/treasurer for seven years. Ms Ksiazek participated in many of the Association’s task forces, including the Task Force on the Definition of a Patient-Pharmacist Relationship, the Task Force on Pharmacy Technician Education and Training Programs, the Task Force on Telepharmacy and the Implementation of the Medicare Drug Benefit Medication Therapy Management Provisions, and the Task Force to Examine NABP’s Data Resources. She also served on the Committee on Law Enforcement/Legislation and the Hospital Subgroup of the Task Force to Review and Recommend Revisions to the Controlled Substances Act. As a member of the New York State Board of Pharmacy, Ms Ksiazek served two terms as chair. She is also a member of the New York State Board for Professional Medical Conduct. Ms Ksiazek’s expertise in medication safety and regulatory and accreditation compliance led her to a position in hospital administration as the director of medical staff quality and education at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, NY. Ms Ksiazek earned her bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from the State University of New York at Buffalo, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and received an honorary doctor of pharmacy license from the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy.
President: Jack W. “Jay” Campbell IV, JD, RPh
Mr Campbell, executive director of the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy, automatically assumed the office of president. Prior to the election, he served one-year terms as president-elect and treasurer and a three-year term as an Executive Committee member representing District 3. As an active member of NABP, Mr Campbell has made many contributions to the NABP District 3 meetings, and previously served as president of District 3 from 2008 to 2017. In addition, Mr Campbell has served on many of the Association’s committees and task forces, including the Committee on Law Enforcement/Legislation, the Resolutions Committee, and the Task Force to Review and Recommend Revisions to the Controlled Substances Act. NABP awarded Mr Campbell the Lester E. Hosto Distinguished Service Award in 2013. Mr Campbell also teaches pharmacy law and ethics classes at three North Carolina universities. Mr Campbell earned his bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his juris doctor degree from Vanderbilt University School of Law.
President-elect: Timothy D. Fensky, RPh, DPh, FACA
Mr Fensky, a member of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy, was elected to serve as president-elect. Prior to the election, he served a one-year term as treasurer and a two-year term as an Executive Committee member representing District 1. As a member of NABP, Mr Fensky has made many contributions to the NABP District 1 meetings and previously served as president of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy. Mr Fensky served on the Task Force on Best Practices for Veterinary Compounding and the Task Force on Pharmacist Prescriptive Authority. He also previously served as a moderator at several NABP Interactive Forums and currently represents NABP on the Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee to Food and Drug Administration. Mr Fensky is the pharmacy administrator at Bournewood Health Systems and the chief pharmacy officer at Sullivan’s Health Care. Further, he is recognized as a full fellow for the American College of Apothecaries, and is an adjunct faculty member at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Boston, MA. Mr Fensky earned his bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from Northeastern University, Bouvé College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and received an honorary doctor of pharmacy license from the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy.
Treasurer: Caroline D. Juran, RPh, DPh
Ms Juran, executive director of the Virginia Board of Pharmacy, was elected to serve a one-year term as treasurer. Prior to the election, she served a three-year member term, representing District 2, on the Executive Committee. An active member of NABP, Ms Juran served as a member of the 2012 Task Force to Review and Recommend Revisions to the Controlled Substances Act, represented NABP on the 2012 Pharmacist Minimum Data Set Workgroup, and served as a member of the Committee on Law Enforcement/Legislation from 2012-2015, serving as chair from 2012-2013. She also served as Executive Committee liaison for the 2016 Task Force on the Pharmacist Integrated Communications Skills Examination. Ms Juran also served as District 2 secretary/treasurer between 2013 and 2016. Under her leadership, the Virginia Board of Pharmacy received NABP’s Fred T. Mahaffey Award for contributions to the regulation of the practice of pharmacy and their efforts to ensure that compounding is performed in a safe and compliant manner. She served as deputy executive director of the Virginia Board of Pharmacy from 2005-2010 and assumed the duties of executive director in 2010. Between 1995 and 2005, Ms Juran practiced as a community pharmacist and long-term care pharmacist. Ms Juran completed her studies at the College of William and Mary and earned her bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia, and received an honorary doctor of pharmacy license from the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy.
Executive Committee Member: Bradley S. Hamilton, RPh
Mr Hamilton, current vice president of the Maine Board of Pharmacy, was reelected to serve a three-year member term, representing District 1, on the Executive Committee. As a member of NABP, Mr Hamilton has made many contributions to the NABP District 1 meetings, and serves as the district’s vice president. Mr Hamilton served on the Task Force on Expanding International Membership and the Task Force to Develop Regulations Based on Standards of Care, and he represented the Maine Board as a voting delegate at the NABP Annual Meetings since 2016. In 2014, Mr Hamilton was the recipient of the Retail Operations Honorary Backpack Award for his role at Hannaford Supermarket and Pharmacy. He was also named Distinguished Young Pharmacist of the Year in Maine by Pharmacists Mutual Insurance Company in 2006. Mr Hamilton earned his bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from Northeastern University, Bouvé College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
Executive Committee Member: Tejal J. Patel, MBA, PharmD, RPh
Dr Patel, president of the Delaware State Board of Pharmacy, was elected to serve a three-year member term, representing District 2, on the Executive Committee. An active member of NABP, Dr Patel has served as the District 2 secretary/treasurer since 2016. In addition, Dr Patel served on several task forces, including the Task Force on Mutual-Recognition Licensure, the Task Force on Long-Term Care Pharmacy Rules, the Task Force on Expanding International Membership, and the Task Force on Medication Synchronization. In addition, Dr Patel has served as an item writer for both the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination® and the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination®. She has also been a panelist at the NABP Interactive Member Forum. Dr Patel has been the recipient of the Walgreens Customer Service Extra Mile Award, and numerous awards for medication therapy management and immunization services. She has also been engaged in numerous community services such as Flu Clinics at health fairs, blood pressure screenings and charity events for children. Dr Patel earned her master of business administration degree in health care administration from Wilmington University, and her doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of Colorado School of Pharmacy.
Executive Committee Member: Jeffrey J. Mesaros, PharmD, JD, RPh
Dr Mesaros, chair of the Florida Board of Pharmacy, was elected to serve a one-year member term, representing District 3, on the Executive Committee. Dr Mesaros has been a pharmacist attorney for over 15 years. Prior to that role, he served as a staff pharmacist in multiple pharmacy settings. As a member of NABP, Dr Mesaros has made many contributions to the NABP District 3 meetings and served as the District 3 representative on the Committee on Resolutions. In addition, Dr Mesaros served on the Task Force on the Regulation of Pharmacy Benefit Managers and the Task Force on the Definition of a Patient-Pharmacist Relationship. Dr Mesaros is an active member of other professional organizations, including the American Bar Association, the American Society for Pharmacy Law, and the American Pharmacists Association. He has also served as an adjunct faculty member of the University of Florida College of Pharmacy and the University of Hawaii at Hilo – the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy. Dr Mesaros earned his master of science degree in pharmacy regulation and policy from the University of Florida, and his juris doctor from University of Miami School of Law. He also holds a doctor of pharmacy degree from Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy.
Executive Committee Member: Philip P. Burgess, MBA, DPh, RPh
Mr Burgess, former member of the Illinois State Board of Pharmacy, is serving the third year of a second three-year member term, representing District 4, on the Executive Committee. An active member of NABP, Mr Burgess served on the Committee on Constitution and Bylaws, the Committee on Law Enforcement/Legislation, the Task Force on Drug Return and Reuse Programs, and the Task Force on the Regulation of Telepharmacy Practice. Mr Burgess served for five terms as the chair of the Illinois Board. He also worked as a regulatory consultant in Chicago, IL. Mr Burgess spent 40 years in a variety of roles at Walgreen Co, including national director of pharmacy operations and national director of pharmacy affairs. Mr Burgess earned his bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from the University of Tennessee and a master of business administration degree from the University of Chicago.
Executive Committee Member: Shane R. Wendel, PharmD, RPh
Dr Wendel, a member of the North Dakota State Board of Pharmacy, was elected to serve a three-year member term, representing District 5, on the Executive Committee. Dr Wendel has served as president of the North Dakota State Board of Pharmacy. He has been a pharmacist and pharmacy manager for nearly 25 years, working in the retail pharmacy setting. He began his career at Target as a staff pharmacist and as manager of the pharmacy department. He is currently the owner and pharmacist at Central Pharmacy in Carrington/New Rockford, ND, and a partner at Pharmacists Associates, LLC. Dr Wendel has been an active member of multiple pharmacy organizations, including the North Dakota Pharmacy Service Corporation, National Community Pharmacists Association, and the Professional Compounding Centers of America. He is also a past president and board member of the North Dakota Pharmacists Association. Dr Wendel earned his bachelor of science degree in pharmacy and doctor of pharmacy degree from North Dakota State University.
Executive Committee Member: Lenora S. Newsome, PD
Dr Newsome, president of the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy, is serving the second year of a three-year member term, representing District 6, on the Executive Committee. As a member of NABP, Dr Newsome has served on the Task Force on Regulation of Pharmacist Care Services and the Committee on Law Enforcement/Legislation. Dr Newsome previously served as vice president and secretary of the Board. In 2016, the Board received NABP’s Fred T. Mahaffey Award for their contributions to the regulation of the practice of pharmacy and their efforts to combat prescription drug abuse. Dr Newsome has been practicing pharmacy in rural communities for almost 40 years. Currently, she is the pharmacy manager at Walgreens in Camden, AR. In 2015, Dr Newsome was honored with the Percy Malone Award for Public Service by the Arkansas Pharmacists Association. Dr Newsome completed her pre-pharmacy coursework at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and earned her bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy in Little Rock.
Executive Committee Member: Nicole L. Chopski, PharmD, BCGP, ANP
Dr Chopski, executive director of the Idaho State Board of Pharmacy, is serving the second year of a three-year member term, representing District 7, on the Executive Committee. Dr Chopski has made many contributions to the NABP/American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy District 7 meetings and currently serves as its secretary/treasurer. She has served on many of the Association’s committees, including serving as a delegate on the Committee on Resolutions in 2016, 2014, and 2013, and as a voting delegate at the NABP Annual Meetings in 2015, 2014, and 2013. Dr Chopski was also a panelist at the NABP Interactive Member Forums in 2016 and 2012. Dr Chopski has been certified as an authorized nuclear pharmacist (ANP) by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission at Purdue University for more than a decade and is a board certified geriatric pharmacist (BCGP) through the Board of Pharmacy Specialties. She previously served as a hospital pharmacist at Portneuf Medical Center and served as a board member for the Idaho State Board of Pharmacy for 12 years. Dr Chopski earned her doctor of pharmacy degree from Idaho State University.
Executive Committee Member: Richard B. Mazzoni, RPh
Mr Mazzoni, chair of the New Mexico Board of Pharmacy, is serving the third year of a second three-year member term, representing District 8, on the Executive Committee. As a member of NABP, Mr Mazzoni served on the Association’s task forces and committees, including the Task Force on Expanding International Membership, the Task Force to Examine Strategies for Preventing and Reacting to Pharmacy Robberies and Thefts, and the Committee on Constitution and Bylaws. Mr Mazzoni has also served as a member of the New Mexico Attorney General’s Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Steering Committee. He is currently a consultant, and his firm, R. Mazzoni & Associates, assists clients with regulatory strategy. From 2006 to 2012, he was the director of regulatory compliance at CVS Caremark, where he was responsible for regulatory activities in 22 states and served as the company’s representative to boards of pharmacy. Mr Mazzoni earned his bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from University of the Pacific.
