Jack W. “Jay” Campbell IV, JD, RPh, Begins Term as NABP President During the Association’s 115th Annual Meeting

Jack W. “Jay” Campbell IV, JD, RPh, began his term as president of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP®) during the Final Business Session of the Association’s 115^th Annual Meeting, May 16-18, 2019, in Minneapolis, MN. During his presidency, Mr Campbell is committed to exploring opportunities to expand licensure portability. Specifically, Mr Campbell plans to pursue expansion of NABP’s Electronic Licensure Transfer Program by developing a model that addresses current interstate activities and practices. This initiative would include developing an interstate endorsement to expedite the licensure process by offering credible alternatives to certain, existing requirements.

Mr Campbell was sworn in as the 115^th NABP president after serving one-year terms as the Association’s president-elect and treasurer. Prior to that, Mr Campbell served as a member of the NABP Executive Committee representing District 3 for three years. After his presidency concludes, he will serve a one-year term as chairperson of the Association’s Executive Committee.

Mr Campbell is the executive director of the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy, a position he has held since 2006. He began his career as a community pharmacist and as a researcher for a pharmaceutical company. Following law school and a federal judicial clerkship, Mr Campbell practiced as an appellate litigation attorney for eight years in Washington, DC, and Charlotte, NC.

As an adjunct instructor and adjunct professor, Mr Campbell shares his pharmacy law expertise with students at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) Eshelman School of Pharmacy, Wingate University School of Pharmacy, and Campbell University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. His third-year pharmacy students at UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy named him the 2017, 2013, and 2009 PY3 Instructor of the Year.

As an active member of NABP, Mr Campbell has made many contributions to the NABP District 3 meetings, and previously served as president of District 3 from 2008 to 2017. In addition, Mr Campbell has served on many of the Association’s committees and task forces, including the Committee on Law Enforcement/Legislation where he served as Executive Committee liaison in 2017; the Committee on Resolutions where he served as a member in 2011 and as chair in 2008; and the Task Force to Review and Recommend Revisions to the Controlled Substances Act where he served as chair in 2010. NABP awarded Mr Campbell the Lester E. Hosto Distinguished Service Award – the highest honor bestowed by the Association – in 2013.

In addition to serving as director of District 3, Mr Campbell is involved with other professional organizations, including the American Society for Pharmacy Law where he was president from 2008 to 2009, and the American Pharmacists Association.

Mr Campbell obtained his bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from UNC in 1993 and his juris doctor degree from Vanderbilt University School of Law in 1997, graduating as the valedictorian of his class at both universities.
