NABP 113th Annual Meeting Features Topics Addressing Current Pharmacy Practice Issues and Offers Up to 6.5 Contact Hours of CPE Credit

The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP®) offers attendees the opportunity to earn up to 6.5 contact hours (0.65 CEUs) of Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)-accredited continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credit at its 113th Annual Meeting, themed “Explore, Discover, Act Imagineering the Future of Pharmacy Regulation.” The meeting’s knowledge-based CPE activities are designed to address current issues affecting the regulation of pharmacy practice. The Annual Meeting will be held May 20-23, 2017, at the Hyatt Regency Orlando on International Drive in Orlando, FL.

Saturday, May 20

Years of discussion and debate have provided conceptual frameworks for expanded scopes of practice for the pharmacist and pharmacy technician; however, translating that framework into an actionable implementation blueprint has been slow to occur. “Expanded Scopes of Practice − No More Mickey Mousing” will present for discussion and analysis specific responsibilities for the pharmacist and pharmacy technician in a changed and expanded scope of practice setting. It will also address the question, “Should regulations allow for both pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to expand their scopes of practice to their fullest capacities without listing allowed and prohibited activities?” This pre-meeting session takes place from 1:30 to 3:30 PM and provides two contact hours (0.2 CEUs) of CPE credit. The spirit of Epcot, or Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, is reflected in the various telepharmacy practices that are currently under review by many boards of pharmacy. Such telepharmacy “prototypes” are proposed to address various practice settings, and boards are tasked with determining whether patient needs can be adequately met while protecting the public. During the joint CPE session “Telehealth − Another Epcot Experiment?,” regulators of health care providers will provide participants with an in-depth discussion comparing the practice of telehealth with the practice of telepharmacy. Many states have enacted prescribing authority or statewide protocols for pharmacists to prescribe and dispense naloxone without a prescription to patients at risk for an opioid overdose and/or to a person in a position to assist a person at risk for experiencing an opiate-related overdose. Is this authority being utilized to its full capacity? During the CPE session geared toward board executive officers and members, “Naloxone and Beyond: Can Expanded Scopes Impact the Opioid Epidemic?,” a specialist in opioid use disorder, a board of pharmacy representative, and a pharmacist on the front lines will share with participants how pharmacists having this expanded scope of practice can help curb this national epidemic that has taken the lives of too many. This session takes place from 8:30 to 10 AM and provides 1.5 contact hours (0.15 CEUs) of CPE credit. (ACPE UANs: 0205-0000-17-005-L03-P/T)

While the July 1, 2018 effective date for United States Pharmacopeia (USP) General Chapter Hazardous Drugs—Handling in Healthcare Settings may seem far in the future, it will be here before we know it. Are pharmacy board compliance officers prepared to inspect for these new standards? During the CPE session geared toward compliance officers, titled “USP Hazardous Drugs: It’s a Small, Dangerous World,” experts in this field will provide attendees with valuable information concerning relevant provisions to ensure compliance with this new standard.
