During this webinar, participants will learn about buprenorphine as a treatment option for dependence on opioids or other substances. The presenters will discuss the effects of the opioid epidemic on child safety and welfare, including how it can be a cause for the increase in removal of children from their parents’ homes and placement into foster care. This session will also explore stigma as it relates to opioid use disorder and its treatment with medication.

Jennifer Muro Neumann is a graduate of Birmingham Southern College and Temple University Beasley School of Law. She has over twenty years’ experience in child protective services law, having served as an assistant attorney general for the State of Alabama. Prior to her time with the State of Alabama, she worked in child protective services law for the Philadelphia City Solicitor’s Office in Philadelphia, PA. Jennifer is currently in private practice in Birmingham, AL, and proudly represents the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy as Board Counsel and continues to provide legal services to Courts and to social service agencies on child welfare legal issues.

Assistant Chief Pharmacist, Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services

Erica Schlesinger Hurst, PharmD, is a West Tennessee native and graduate of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Pharmacy. Erica is currently the assistant chief pharmacist and state opioid treatment authority designee for the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (TDMHSAS) and has served in this position for the past five years. Prior to her role at TDMHSAS, she completed a PGY-1 managed care residency with TDMHSAS and UTHSC.
