Does NABP have a policy regarding cannabidiol (CBD)?
No. Under Standard 5 (Legal Compliance), we require that all applicants and accredited entities comply with all provisions of “Applicable Law.” Under our Terms and Conditions, “Applicable Law” means “all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, regulatory guidance, health care professional practice standards, any other applicable professional practice standards. Where there is a conflict, the most stringent requirement applies, unless preempted.”
Under federal law, it is illegal to market CBD by adding it to a food or labeling it as a dietary supplement. CBD is also prohibited in animal food products. Cannabis-derived ingredients are currently permitted in cosmetics. We merely require that applicants and accredited entities comply with Standard 5, which requires adherence with federal law.
