Pharmacist workload, burnout, and well-being issues, and their effect on patient safety, have been considered for years, but the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has brought such concerns to the forefront. The concerns brought by various pharmacy groups regarding workplace conditions and how they affect pharmacy personnel and, ultimately, patient care, have placed regulators in the firestorm of how to effectuate change. In response to this storm, some state boards of pharmacy have revised their rules to allow for innovative practice models that help improve working conditions. Pharmacy stakeholders and regulators will share with attendees their efforts to ensure that pharmacy practice occurs in a working environment that is conducive to the well-being and safety of all patients.

How to Access the Webinar and Earn CPE
The webinar is eligible for Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)-accredited continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credit. More details regarding the presentations, CPE activity credits, and browser requirements can be found in the CPE Activity Information guide.
Follow the steps below to access the home study webinar and claim CPE credit:
- Log in to your NABP e-Profile and select the Continuing Education Activities tile to purchase this activity and obtain the access code.
- Log in to NABP’s CPE Submission Site and select the “Home Study CPE” tab.
- If you do not have a log in for Learner Community, you will need to create an account.
- Enter the access code provided in your confirmation email and click “Redeem Code.”
- Enter only one code at a time.
- View the recording, complete the activity in its entirety, including watching the full video, and pass the post-test. Once completed, the Credit section will unlock.
- Select the appropriate credit (pharmacy or pharmacy technician), enter your NABP e-Profile ID and date of birth, and click the “claim” button to earn credit.
Claims must be submitted within 60 days from the date you opened the activity.
Presenters
John Clay Kirtley currently serves as the executive director of the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy. He is also a member and past president of the Accreditation Council on Pharmacy Education’s board of directors, as well as the president of MALTAGON, a professional association of boards of pharmacy across the Southeast United States. As a pharmacist, he has taken an active role in the mentoring of future pharmacists through his work as a community pharmacist, Community Clinical Clerkship preceptor for senior students, and as an assistant professor at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Pharmacy. As a student, he was an active leader in the American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) on the local, regional, and national level, namely as the APhA-ASP national president-elect, president, and as a member of the APhA board of trustees.
Dr Kirtley and his wife Melanie, who is also a pharmacist, live in Little Rock with their two children, Allison and Jack. Dr Kirtley completed his pre-pharmacy coursework at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, AR, and graduated from the UAMS College of Pharmacy with his doctor of pharmacy degree.
Scott Knoer, MS, PharmD, FASHP, was the 13th executive vice president and chief executive officer of the APhA. Before his leadership role at APhA, Dr Knoer was the chief pharmacy officer at Cleveland Clinic from 2011 to 2020, where he led an international pharmacy enterprise with a $1.4 billion drug budget and 1,558 full-time employees in 18 hospitals with facilities in Ohio, Florida, Nevada, Toronto, London, and Abu Dhabi. Previously, he was the director of pharmacy at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, for a decade and an operations manager at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston for three years.
Dr Knoer has served the profession extensively through involvement in professional organizations. He has been published widely on a variety of pharmacy and leadership topics and is often quoted in the media related to medication-related issues. He is a passionate advocate for patients and the profession of pharmacy.
He received his bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Creighton University in 1988 and his doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of Nebraska in 1996. He completed a two-year administrative residency with a concurrent master of science degree in hospital pharmacy from the University of Kansas in 1998.
Steve Schierholt serves as the executive director of the State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy. He is responsible for administering all orders of the board as well as directing agency operations. Mr Schierholt has more than 40 years of experience in law enforcement and agency administration. Under his leadership, the board significantly expanded its mission to protect the public by expanding regulatory oversight of pharmacy technicians, prescriber offices with controlled substances, home medical equipment, prescriber compounding, and portions of the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program.
Prior to joining the board, Mr Schierholt was the assistant superintendent of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) at the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. From 2004 to 2007, he served the executive director of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission. Mr Schierholt, a United States Army veteran, also served as an assistant attorney general, BCI special agent, deputy sheriff with the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office and Assistant Franklin County Prosecutor. A native of Lima, Ohio, he received his undergraduate degree and juris doctorate from Capital University.
